The University of Oslo has singled out functional materials and nanotechnology as a prioritised research area. This interdisciplinary activity is led by a steering group comprised of members from the Department of Physics, the Department of Chemistry, and the Centre for Material Science. This steering group will allocate the vacant doctoral positions in collaboration with the relevant Faculties/ Departments/Centres. The University of Oslo plays a central role in the FUNMAT research initiative on functional materials and nanotechnology in Norway where close collaboration between university and institute partners is of importance.

Applications for a doctoral scholarship should be within the subject area functional materials and nanotechnology, ideally relating to one of the following themes: functional oxides, materials for energy technology, materials for microtechnology or materials for nanotechnology. The main emphasis is on inorganic or hybrid type materials. The multidisciplinary research has both experimental and theoretical components.

All recipients of a doctoral scholarship from the University are obliged to follow a doctoral programme. Applicants must have a postgraduate qualification, at Masters level or equivalent.
